A no-nonsense guide to self-care

As summer heats up, the silly season takes its toll and for families, the hustle and bustle of school holidays is in full swing, it can be easy to become tired, drained and not your usual self.

A little bit of no-nonsense self-care can go a LONG way. Health professional Angie from the Active Sisters shares her easy-to-follow self-care tips for maintaining your wellbeing during this busy time of the year.

GET A CALENDAR TO VISUALISE

There are events EVERYWHERE this time of the year and it can be easy to overbook. Get yourself a calendar so you can visually track your events and also track your down time as well. Planning ahead can take the pain out of the season.

Schedule in time for YOU

Don’t forget the most IMPORTANT plans during this time of the year – planning for YOU TIME. Book time away, take a retreat, meditate, get a massage but whatever you do, do something for YOU.

Fresh air clears the mind

When I have a million things going on from week to week it can become overwhelming and cause stress & anxiety. When my life is in a whirlwind I find putting my shoes on and going to our local foreshore for a walk or run really helps my headspace. I am able to continue tackling the busy period. Why don’t you give it a go next time you feel stressed and feel the difference it can make.

Treat yourself to a cool new water bottle

As it heats up and we are moving more, it’s easy to become dehydrated. Buy yourself a bottle that you want to have with you at all times, something that is enticing to pick up, carry around and drink from. It can make all the difference!

Detox and switch off

Detox is about both your body and mind. Drink plenty of water or try herbal teas to detox your body. There are also plenty of guides that will help you steer clear of toxins for a few days and give your body a rest.

It is just as important to detox your mind too. Why not try to take some time away from your phone, computer and social media. Be mindful and in the moment without the world of connectivity needing something from you.

It’s okay to say “NO”!

“No” to that work cake, “No” to that social event. Don’t sacrifice your mental health for someone else’s gain if you know you are going to regret it later. It’s okay to put your health first.

Active catch ups

Do you find that most catch ups around Christmas involve alcohol and regretful hangovers? Why not swap your cocktail catch up for a fun active event. Take a class together like yoga, acroyoga, bike riding, dance, surf lesson, or head to the beach for a game of outdoor sport – the options are endless!
