Formed in 2017, the Newport Game Fishing Club is fast on its way to becoming Queensland’s biggest game fishing club. With over 190 members (drawn from all over the Brisbane area), Newport already has an international success record.

What we’re about

The club was formed after a group of fishing enthusiasts were encouraged to form a new club offering something different to other clubs in South East QLD. The formula has certainly worked with the club applying for Queensland Game Fishing Association with the largest number of members at affiliation and the third largest club in QLD after only its first year in operation.

TAKE A LOOK AT TOURNAMENTS

Club members are encouraged to compete in the many tournaments in and around the Brisbane region, as well as those further afield. The sharing of information is a critical factor that sets this club apart – everyone is encouraged to talk about where the fish are, what the bait is like in a particular area, and different techniques that have proven successful.

Last September a team from the club, made up of Team captain David Trask, along with Bryce Trask and Todd Kalpus, fished the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament for the second year running, taking out a credible 5th place, having taken 2nd place in the previous year’s tournament.

A CLUB FOR EVERYONE

Ladies if you’re a keen fisho then this club is for you, the club encourages the ladies to get out fishing and compete with yearly prizes and the club expects to hold a ladies only tournament in the near future.

Recently, three teams of ladies from Newport fished the Mooloolaba Billfish Babes light tackle tournament. Club boat ‘Spartacus’ took out second place, tagging and releasing two marlin, and ‘Big Business’ took the prize for the best dressed boat and best photograph. The friendly atmosphere, spirit of competition and comradery make this club stand out from all the others.

NEVER TOO EARLY TO START

Junior members are not forgotten either, monthly junior giveaways are a regular feature, NGFC plans to have a junior tournament coming up shortly and as a club they also run a kid friendly group chat page on facebook that is moderated to ensure the juniors are having fun. At the first of many Newport tournaments the prizes for the juniors included a brand new boat and motor donated by the clubs major sponsor Brisbane Marine.

The club runs 2 pages, one which is general information and the other page is a closed chat room environment where members share stories and swap fishing info on a regular basis. Go to Newport Gamefish Club and follow the links to the group from there.

The club meets twice a month for its fishing weekend weigh in and BBQ where there are great prize giveaways and also end of month meetings where the club regularly has guest speakers to talk about all things fishing and boating.
