5 tips for transitioning your wardrobe from Summer/Autumn to Winter

Words and advice by Rachel Wernicke of Redcliffe Style

We are so lucky in Redcliffe with our gorgeous, mild seasons. I find I’ll wear my favourite summer dresses in winter too but with knits and boots instead of sandals and a golden (fake) tan. But, when I feel the first slight chill in the air, I know it’s time to make room in my wardrobe for bulkier winter pieces.

These are my top tips for transitioning my wardrobe into winter.

One

Remove all the pieces you haven’t worn over the last summer, swimwear and anything that’s not wearable (wrong size, too damaged or stained). You only want to save and store summer items that you love and will wear again. This is also a great time to find clothes to donate.

Two

Attack your shoe wardrobe the same way. I usually pack away the majority of my summer heels and sandals but leave out a few favourites. If the shoes are passed their ‘best by’ date, then move on. I often polish my shoes and replace the soles or heels but when toes are too worn or heels too damaged, then it’s time to remove them permanently from your wardrobe.

Three

Unpack and rediscover pieces packed up at the end of last winter. This part is so much fun and I love unpacking my favourite knits, jackets and scarves. Make sure they have survived storage and are in good condition. Then wash or dry-clean them so they are fresh and good to go.

Four

Look if there are gaps in your wardrobe. I will only add new items that will mix and match with my current wardrobe. I also find it hard to spend money on anything I won’t get good ‘cost-per-wear’. I love quality pieces I will wear forever.

Five

Finally, before you go shopping, consider your winter colour palette. In winter, I wear a lot of black, grey, nude and blue. My plan is to add more green this year, maybe a plaid jacket and, of course, the perfect pair of denim jeans.

Finally, only wear pieces you love and feel good in. Life’s too short to waste time feeling uncomfortable.
